Our Favorite Authors
We read several books each day to the children. Some are read for pure enjoyment, others to focus on a specific literacy lesson. Every day, kindergarten students meet for Readers or Writers Workshop. For these new readers and budding authors, we read books that highlight a specific skill for becoming a writer or a better reader.
Each month, we read books for enjoyment. We call these Our Favorite Authors books. These authors may have won the Caldecott award; the Newberry prize or we just love their work. They may also highlight other things we are focused on that month (e.g. a specific continent, plants, the season, etc.).
It is always wonderful to read a book over and over. Each time, the child will learn a little more. Three year olds love to learn to stories by memory. For instance, most of our first-year students can say the last words of each page of the Big Red Barn…
“and they all flew away, at the end of the day.”
