WEBSITES ...for Parents to Help their Students Practice Skills
WEBSITE for learning letter sounds and sight words http://www.romandoctor.com/LearnToRead.htm This website is a place where you can work with your child to practice beginning sight words and rhyming words. Some of the lists actually speak the word/words being presented so students can test themselves. Our school uses the Dolch sight words.
My recommendation is that an adult is always with the child when practicing. This insures that the child is using the sight correctly. We want the child to recognize when they have read a word correctly and when they have not. Frequently, without an adult present, children just pay attention to the sounds that are made and do not focus on self-correction. This can be a fun way for a parent to help a child who is struggling or to have fun with a child who just needs a review.
http://www.Read, Kiddo, Read is a great site for suggesting books for your beginning reader. Whether you're looking for a book to read as a family, or for your child to read alone, this site is full of award winning suggestions.
