“Teachers can only help the great work that is being done, as servants help the master. Doing so, they will be witnesses to the unfolding of the human soul.” Maria Montessori – Education for the New World
Practical Life in the Montessori Classroom
What is the Practical Life Area in a Montessori Classroom?
Practical Life is one of the areas of the classroom—the others are Sensorial, Language and Mathematics. Practical Life consists of the simple activities performed daily by adults to maintain their homes and enhance family relationships. Activities in the classroom include: those for care of self such as washing hands, learning to button and tie and polishing one’s shoes; those for care of the environment such as washing a table, arranging flowers and sweeping; and those that show the child how to use grace and courtesy and controlled movement.
"The objects surrounding the child should look solid and attractive to him, and the”house of the child’’ should be lovely and pleasant in all its particulars… It is almost possible to say that there is a mathematical relationship between the beauty of his surroundings and the activity of the child; he will make discoveries rather more voluntarily in a gracious setting than an ugly one." -Maria Montessori
Purposes of the Practical Life Area:
Direct Purpose 1. Independence: children are eager to learn to do things for themselves and these activities show them how to perform daily tasks so that they won’t have to depend on others 2. Concentration: the child’s desire to do these challenging tasks helps him stay focused 3. Control of Movement: children have to follow a sequence of steps and control the use of their hands and bodies in order to complete the exercises
Indirect Purpose 1. Confidence: the child learns that he/she is capable 2. Preparation for writing and mathematics: children learn to organize their thoughts because these exercises bring to light logical sequence and order 3. Social responsibility: at about age 4.5 children realize that their doings have a social impact and perform the practical life tasks to help run the classroom community
Practical Life Activities for Home · Setting the table · Folding clothes · Putting clothes in the washer and then the dryer · Pouring drinks · Serving food · Wiping the table before and after a meal · Washing the dishes · Sweeping · Mopping · Dusting · Cleaning windows and mirrors · Helping an adult figure out what is needed at the store · Gardening · Feeding the birds · Vacuuming · Washing vegetables or fruits · Cooking
Guidelines: 1. The activities must be real (things that need to be done around the home) 2. Simplify the steps for your child (give a lesson) 3. Materials should be child-sized as much as possible
“The exercises of Practical Life are a celebration of the spirit of Man in his living environment."
